Rehab Craft Cambodia
After three decades of war, one of Cambodia's tragic legacies is the countless landmines that dot the countryside. With a population of around 11.5 million, Cambodia currently has one of the highest proportions of people disabled by landmines in the world, at an estimated one in every 290 people. While Cambodians with disabilities have historically had little opportunity to build job experience, Rehab Craft Cambodia provides employment, training and opportunity for a number of disabled Cambodians. A non-profit NGO, Rehab Craft doesn't hire on the basis of education or job experience. Instead, they start at the beginning, and invest in each of their members. Each artisan is trained for six months in tailoring, and for another six months in leather working before they begin making products, making them the most highly-skilled artisan team in the country! The artisans at Rehab Craft make fair wages for skilled work; artisans there earn two and a half to three times the average factory production wage.

More than half of Rehab Craft's members are landmine amputees, and many others are victims of polio. Rehab Craft has 52 permanent staff in production, retail, administration and support groups, all of whom have disabilities. The senior management staff have all been trained and promoted from within Rehab Craft Cambodia. Rehab Craft's future is independent - a non-profit organization run by, and for, Cambodians with disabilities - a powerful example to those who still believe that disability equals dependence.
