Pet food program keeps pets with owners

The Seattle Humane Society's Pet Food Bank Program enables more than a 1,000 pets per month stay with their owners.

The owners typically are "low-income citizens, seniors, and people with HIV/AIDS. These pet food bank clients do not have to choose between pet care and self care," said Bryon Blanchard of SHS in a recent letter to

Blanchard cited one client who was living on a limited income and was afraid that she would have to give up her nine-year-old terrier Bunny. "Through the Seattle Humane Society's Pet Food Bank, Bunny's food was delivered to her house and Esther was able to keep her faithful companion," he said.

The Seattle Humane Society received a grant in January from to help support this program.
