Michelle Deleso's mother survived breast cancer, and in her honor Deleso felt she had to do something to raise money and awareness so other individuals who are affected will be able to survive as well, according to LoHud News.
Last year, Deleso decided to combine breast cancer awareness
with America's favorite pastime, coming up with the Home Run Derby for a Cause.
"My entire family is baseball oriented," Deleso, the Development and Outreach Coordinator at Support Connection in Yorktown Heights, told the news source. "I thought this was a perfect way to get men involved."
The event, which is scheduled to take place this weekend, is already expecting twice as many people as it did last year, and they hope to raise their goal of $2,000, the media outlet reports.
According to the Susan G. Komen organization, it is recommended that once a woman turns 40 years old, she should schedule annual mammograms. If someone has an extensive family history of breast cancer, they may want to start making appointments sooner in order to catch it at its earlier stages.
